Surf Bronze Medallion

Pre-Requisites

  • A candidate must
  • Be a minimum of 15 years old on the date of examination.
  • Have completed a 400 metre swim in nine minutes or less, in a swimming pool of not less than 25 metres or over a measured open water course before any training starts in the surf and/or deep water.

Details

The Bronze Medallion is a challenging award, which provides surf lifesavers with the knowledge and skills to be able to participate in beach patrols or supervise groups of people in the open water environment. This is the minimum qualification for those who wish to supervise groups swimming at the beach (Tasmanian Outdoor Education Guidelines).The practical and theoretical sections of the award are designed to test a person's competency in surf awareness, survival, patrol and rescue procedures, radio operations, emergency care plus anatomy and physiology. A candidates physical fitness is tested by a 200m run- 200m swim- 200m run completed in under eight minutes; a 400m pool swim to be completed in under nine minutes; simulated rescues using a rescue board and tube. All these skills combine to train candidates to be an effective member of a patrol team tasked with providing a safe beach and aquatic environment.

  • Contribute to participative arrangements for the management of occupational health and safety
  • Follow workplace procedures for hazard identification and risk control.
  • Describe surfing and environmental conditions and hazards.
  • Recognise an appropriate safe beach and zone for surf bathing in key locations
  • Demonstrate surf skills
  • Explain the functions of the circulatory, skeletal, respiratory and nervous systems.
  • Identify basic patient management techniques
  • Perform basic patient management techniques
  • Perform basic resuscitation techniques
  • Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques
  • Communicate in the workplace
  • Perform radio communication practices using approved SLSA radios
  • Perform patient approaches, support and escapes aided by equipment on a conscious and an unconscious patient
  • Identify people in distress in a surfing or water environment
  • Perform surf skills
  • Complete a 200m run, 200m swim and 200m run within eight minutes.
  • Perform patient retrieval and support unaided by equipment.
  • Work as part of a team
  • Describe the purpose of patrols and patrolling
  • Demonstrate standard patrol practices
  • Identify and demonstrate all the factors that affect bathers and those using water for recreation
